Wellness Coaching is an integral part of every individual consultation program we offer here at Holistic Nutrition International LLC.  Wellness coaching is an ongoing partnership between patient and coach designed to assist you in making appropriate and lasting lifestyle changes as we address any acute and/or chronic conditions. 

Emotional Wellbeing

Emotional and spiritual well-being has played a primary role in the health of every one of the patients we have treated.  Our emotional health revolves around our ability to communicate with others and maintain intimacy with those we love.  Achieving satisfying emotional and spiritual health will directly affect your physical health and well-being.  For most of us, this is the most important and challenging step toward optimum health.

People with good emotional health are aware of their thoughts, feelings and behaviors.  They have learned healthy ways to cope with the stress and problems that are a normal part of life. They feel good about themselves and have healthy relationships.  However, many things that happen in your life can disrupt your emotional health and lead to strong feelings of sadness, stress or anxiety.  These include:

  • Being laid off from your job
  • Having a child leave or return home
  • Dealing with the death of a loved one
  • Getting divorced or married
  • Suffering an illness or an injury
  • Getting a job promotion
  • Experiencing money problems
  • Moving to a new home or having a baby.

The Mind-Body Connection

“Good” changes can be just as stressful as “bad” changes.  Your body responds to the way you think, feel and act.  Poor emotional health can weaken your body's immune system, making you more likely to get colds and other infections during emotionally difficult times.   This is often called the “mind/body connection.”  When you are stressed, anxious or upset, your body tries to tell you that something isn’t right.  For example, high blood pressure or a stomach ulcer might develop after a particularly stressful event, such as the death of a loved one.  

There are three important stages to consider with regard to stress:  perception, response, and internalization.  It is the internalization of stress that is detrimental.  Stress that is internalized negatively will have lasting effects.  For this reason, we must find effective individual techniques for stress reduction.  For some, effective stress reduction could be yoga.  For others, it is running or golf.  It may be meditating or gardening or keeping a journal.  Many people benefit from education, such as attending a class or reading a book.  Stress reduction is essential to achieving emotional and spiritual health, which will directly affect your physical health and well-being.

The following may be physical signs that your emotional health is out of balance:

  • Back pain
  • Change in appetite
  • Chest pain
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Dry mouth
  • Extreme tiredness
  • General aches and pains
  • Headaches
  • High blood pressure
  • Insomnia (trouble sleeping)
  • Lightheadedness
  • Palpitations (the feeling that your heart is racing)
  • Sexual problems
  • Shortness of breath
  • Stiff neck
  • Sweating
  • Upset stomach
  • Weight gain or loss
